Abstract

The study aimed at analyzing English teacher perceptions and its implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of teaching English for young learners and the comparison between teachers perceptions’ and its implementation by English Primary School in Denpasar. This research used mixed method design with a qualitative dominant. The subjects of this research were three teachers from three different schools in Denpasar who taught English for young learners. Convenience sampling techniques was used in selecting subjects and schools. This research used 4 instruments to get the data, namely: the researcher (2) questionnaire of teachers’ perceptions of pedagogical content knowledge, observation sheet to record teachers’ PCK implementation and (4) interview guide. The result showed the average score of teachers’ perceptions was 3.85 which categorized as high with the interval 3.3335 ≤ M ≤ 4.0005. The average score teachers’ implementation was 8.85 which categorized as low with the interval 7.84 ≤ M ≤ 13.06. In addition, the study found discrepancy between teachers’ perceptions and its implementation. Since the perceptions was in a high category and the implementation was in a low category, this comparison falls in a no consistency category. Such discrepancy caused by the lack of teaching preparation, the uninteresting teaching strategy which included few to no media and the monotonous teaching sources. Teacher professional awareness to do Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for English teachers at primary education needs to be reinforced as an effort of quality assurance.

The design applied is a quantitative research. There were 90 students recruited using cluster quota sampling. The data were gathered using scales and reading test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases: descriptively and inferentially. Whereas inferentially, the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading anxiety is at high level while reading self-efficacy and reading competency are at the low levels; 2) the relations pair-wisely are negative and positive significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous or multiple relationships of the reading anxiety and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant (  =0.81; α =0.01).

Abstract

As literature reflects human life, the characterizations of a fictional character in a novel can be analyzed as the reflections of the subconscious of the character in Freud's psychoanalysis. The present study will describe the characterizations of Lucy Pevensie as the main character in C.S. Lewis’ Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and elaborate on how the main character's subconscious as reflected through her characterizations affects the plot development of the novel. Through the application of close reading with the perspective of Freudian psychoanalysis, the present study reveals that Lucy Pevensie's curious, kind,  curious, kind, truthful, caring, loyal, and brave characterizations are as reflections of her id, ego, and superego. They are affected by the behaviors and characters around her and set the plot in motion (starting from disjunction, trajectory, proleptic events, reversal, discovery, and ending). As the end of the plot was resolved with Lucy Pevensie's bravery that leads to the saving of Edmund Pevensie from his demise, Lucy Pevensie's characterizations and their effects on the plot development implies that the combination of instinct, observation of reality and a deep conscience can be beneficial for the greater good of the society.
